The Malagasy new year

The Malagasy new year

The Malagasy new year or the « Taom-baovao malagasy » will take place on March, 28th for Antananarivo. Indeed, several alliances, namely Mahitsiela-Fanjaka, Fito Hasina, Trano Koltoraly, Famato, Tsimisaramianakavy… have made a press conference at Kianjan’ny Kanto about this celebration. Kianjan’ny Kanto Mahamasina will host this unique event which is a Malagasy tradition. The « Olobe » and the Tangala mena of Brickaville, Mananjary, Ambovombe, Sakalava and Antanala will be present during this great event which highlights the « Fihavanana Malagasy », a basic principle of collective life in Madagascar. This year, a 96-year-old Patriarch will bless the festivities so that everything runs smoothly. For the time being, no details have yet been disclosed about the activities that will mark this event, but we can already mention the sacred bath or Fandroana, the Tatao, the Safo-rano misandratr’andro, the Nofon-kena Mitam-pihavanana and the Zara-hasina, rites and traditions of Malagasy ancestors. After Antananarivo, it will be Brickaville’s turn to celebrate the New Year on April, 8th and 9th, and the aforementioned alliances will also attend the event. According to a representative of Trano Koltoraly, the New Year begins on the Alahamady, the first Malagasy month which is also marked by the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the rice harvest.
